Besides, Agarwal’s team is also in communication with confocal.nl, Intelligent Imaging Innovations Inc. (3i)
regarding innovations and in engagement with Nvidia, AMD, Lightspeed Photonics, Amazon UK, Google
Singapore, Samsung India, Samsung Vietnam, VinAI, Cerebras and SiloAI for scientific cooperation. Ibidi-GmbH
has provided feedback on Cymoplive and still in communication to assess further interest. Discussions are
ongoing with Astrazeneca for Cymoplive’s pilot. Different 3D cell culture, organoid and spheroid
manufacturing companies like Gelomics, React4life, Readily3D, Advanced Biomatrix, CollPlant, and Cellink
have been engaged to understand the opportunities and challenges for CymoPlive.
International cooperation
Almost all the cooperation targets are met. UiT’s Agarwal is an international collaborator by USA funded CLIMB
center headed by Stephen Boppart (UIUC). UiT’s Prasad has been funded an EIC transition project as a co-PI
which is led by Ahluwalia (UiT) and includes Pepperkok (EMBL) as partner. Chai Quek (NTU) and Dwarikanath
Mohapatra (Inception Inc.) are included as a co-supervisors on UiT-funded PhD positions that contributed in-
kind support to part of OrganVision activity. Yu Zhong has been hired as an adjunct associate professor on
OrganVision (15%) through EU funds. Eschenhagen (UKE), AG Christ (UKE), Simon Wiegert (Heidelberg
University), Myrmel (UNN), Sumeet Mahajan (USoton, UK), Xudong Chen (NUS, Singapore) etc. have been
included as general assembly members or advisors.
B. Ghosh and S. Acuna from Agarwal’s team and A. Somani from Prasad’s team received Erasmus plus mobility
grant of ~1000 Euros each for research travel on 24.10.2022. Ghosh and Acuna undertook 1-month Research
visit at EMBL Heidelberg with Advanced Light Microscopy Facility in February 2023 and worked on vesicle
counting method with computational super-resolution methods. Somani undertook a visit to CLIMB Center at
UIUC. Agarwal’s team hosted and supervised 2 Bachelor's students from Université de RENNES, France May-
July 2023. Ghosh mentored 1 PhD candidate in Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India resulting in a
publication126. Ghosh from Agarwal’s team undertook 1-week Research visit to the University of Southampton
in March 2023127. Prof. A. S. Chowdhury (Jadavpur University) hosted by Prasad’s group at UiT in Oct 2022 (co-
supervision of a master student and co-authored papers). Two team members of Prasad’ team went to
National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore (3 months each in 2023). Prasad kickstarted a collaboration
with Marianne Clausel,Universite de Lorraine, Nancy, France (papers being co-authored) and Xavier Coubez,
Institut de Cancerologie Strasbourg, France (papers being co-authored). Prasad was hosted by Prof. Mohan
Kankanhalli and Agarwal was hosted by Prof. Xudong Chen for 6 months (Jan-Jun 2023) at NUS Singapore. In addition, OrganVision-related activities were strengthened through international collaborations with Ajit
Bopardikar, University of Houston, USA; Cao Qi, National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore; Hisham Cholakkal, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), UAE; and Hari Mohan Pandey,
Bournemouth University, UK. These collaborations expanded OrganVision’s international research network
and support knowledge exchange across AI, biomedical imaging, computational methods, and translational
innovation. Duocastella and Agarwal each hosted Prof. Peter Torok of Nanyang Technological University of
Singapore at their sites in order to develop collaboration on specialized lens designs. It is being discussed if
pilot validations of CAO can be undertaken at the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences
Engineering led by Prof. Peter Torok. Agarwal invited and hosted Emeritus Professor Colin Sheppard for a
month where his 50+ years long pioneering expertise on modeling of elastic scattering of light in microscopy
systems was utilized for carving ideas regarding the work done in WP2.
Visibility and outreach in scientific communities
Organization of scientific events, workshops and courses
- Bioscopy Conference 2026 (https://www.3dnanoscopy.com/bioscopy-conference/): The OrganVision team organized the Bioscopy Conference 2026 as an international scientific event connecting life sciences, advanced imaging, microscopy, artificial intelligence, computational biology, and translational research. The idea emerged during the OrganVision annual meeting in Berlin and was developed into a full event led by PhD students and researchers, under the advisory of Agarwal, Ghosh and Birgisdottir. The team designed the scientific program, coordinated invited talks, managed event planning, raised sponsorship, and applied for event-organization funding from RCN, along with sponsorship support from organizations such as Optica and Euro-BioImaging. The conference brought together international speakers from multiple countries and attracted around 70 registered participants, creating a strong platform for interdisciplinary scientific exchange, networking, and collaboration among researchers working at the interface of biology, microscopy, AI, and biomedical innovation. For OrganVision, organizing Bioscopy was important because it strengthened the project's international visibility, expanded its scientific network, and demonstrated its role in building a collaborative community around next-generation imaging and AI-enabled biomedical research.
- Panel session at the AI Impact Summit India 2026 (https://www.bioailab.org/indaiaisummit2026): Prof. Dilip K. Prasad proposed the panel session "AI in Healthcare: Navigating Innovation, Ethics, and Regulatory Compliance" to the AI Impact Summit 2026, where it was accepted and featured as part of the summit program. This was important for the OrganVision team because the session positioned OrganVision within a broader international discussion on responsible AI innovation in healthcare. As part of OrganVision and UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Prof. Prasad helped bring together perspectives from AI research, biomedical imaging, clinical practice, ethics, and regulation. The accepted panel highlighted OrganVision's relevance beyond technical development, showing its alignment with clinically meaningful, trustworthy, and responsible AI for healthcare. It featured in an international news media article (read here).
- EIC Pathfinder proposal writing workshop: The EU national contact point in Norway invited Krishna Agarwal to conduct a workshop on EIC Pathfinder grant writing, attended by around 40 registered and eligible candidates preparing for EIC Pathfinder applications. As OrganVision itself is an EIC Pathfinder portfolio project, this invitation demonstrated that expertise developed within the OrganVision team is now being shared to support the next generation of European research and innovation proposals. For OrganVision, this was significant because it strengthened the project's visibility beyond its scientific goals, positioning the team as an experienced contributor to the EIC Pathfinder community, capable of guiding other researchers on how to frame ambitious, high-risk, high-gain research ideas for European funding. The workshop also highlighted OrganVision's broader impact: not only advancing AI-enabled 3D label-free organoid imaging, but also contributing to capacity building, grant-writing excellence, and leadership in Europe's innovation funding landscape.
- Innovation workshop for researchers by researchers: As part of the Bioscopy Conference 2026, held from 15–17 June 2026 at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø, an Innovation Workshop was conducted and sponsored, designed for researchers and led by researchers. The workshop encouraged young scientists to look beyond experiments and publications, and to explore how research ideas can be translated into products, services, and societal solutions. A key strength was that innovation was taught in a language researchers understand, rather than through business-world jargon or abstract commercialization methods. Through sessions led by Krishna Agarwal, Komal Agarwal, Biswajoy Ghosh, and Magnus Engeset from InnoHub UiT, participants learned innovation vocabulary, user-centered problem framing, ecosystem support, and practical pathways from lab to market. The final team pitch session showcased strong creativity and translational thinking. Overall, the workshop was important because it gave researchers hands-on experience in turning scientific knowledge into real-world impact.
- OrganVision workshop at Southampton: The workshop was conducted at the University of Southampton between 19 and 21 June 2024 under Bhattacharya's leadership. This immersive hands-on workshop offered an in-depth introduction to microscopy, blending theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Participants explored the fundamentals of microscopy and gained exposure to a range of advanced microscopy techniques, including confocal microscopy, light-sheet microscopy, Raman microscopy and others. The course also introduced super-resolution methods such as MUSIC and structured illumination microscopy (SIM), demonstrating techniques that extend optical resolution beyond the diffraction limit. Participants also learned modern image processing techniques, including segmentation and thresholding, channel splitting and merging, intensity measurements, and quantitative image analysis, gaining practical experience with ImageJ. The workshop was intended for researchers, students, and professionals seeking to strengthen their microscopy skills and gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art bioimaging techniques in an interactive learning environment. No prior microscopy experience was required. Thirty researchers undertook the workshop.
- Arctic LLM Workshop 2023: The Arctic LLM Workshop 2023, organized by Prof. Dilip K. Prasad's team on 27–28 October 2023, was highly relevant to OrganVision because it helped build foundational confidence and practical knowledge around large language models within the AI and biomedical research community in Tromsø. With 12 presenters and around 40 participants, the workshop was designed to make LLMs accessible to AI aspirants in Norway and to members of the OrganVision team, showing that LLMs are not a "scary beast" but a manageable and learnable technology. For OrganVision, this capacity-building activity was important because the project operates at the intersection of AI, imaging, biology, and translational research, where understanding emerging AI tools can support scientific communication, data interpretation, workflow design, and future innovation. The workshop strengthened the local AI ecosystem around OrganVision and encouraged researchers to engage confidently with next-generation AI methods.
- Summer course on Interpretability in Deep Learning (2023, 2024, 2025): The PhD course and summer school on Interpretability in Deep Learning, first organized in summer 2023 through the Digital Life Norway Research School and NORA framework, has become an important capacity-building activity for AI education and interdisciplinary research communities. The course was organized three times in 2023, 2024, and 2025, with participants joining from across Europe and India, creating an international learning environment around explainable and trustworthy deep learning. Its relevance is especially strong for interdisciplinary teams such as OrganVision, where AI methods must be understandable to researchers working across microscopy, biology, computation, and biomedical applications. The course has now also been adapted into recorded YouTube lectures, making the material suitable for flipped-classroom teaching, self-learning, and wider knowledge sharing beyond the original summer school participants. This transformation extends the impact of the course from a time-bound training activity into a reusable educational resource for building confidence and competence in interpretable AI across diverse research teams.
- Summer course on Generative AI for Health and Life Sciences 2025: The INF-8606 Generative AI for Health and Life Sciences summer school, organized through the Digital Life Norway Research School in 2024 and 2025, was an important training activity for building competence in modern AI methods across biomedical and life-science research communities. The summer school introduced PhD students and researchers to practical applications of generative AI in health and life sciences, supporting their understanding of how these tools can contribute to data interpretation, visualization, scientific workflows, and biomedical discovery. For interdisciplinary projects such as OrganVision, this training was highly relevant because the project connects AI, microscopy, organoid biology, imaging, and translational research. By presenting generative AI in an accessible and application-oriented format, the summer school strengthened confidence, knowledge sharing, and cross-disciplinary collaboration among researchers working at the interface of AI and life sciences.
